Academic Position

The Department of English of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities invites applications for the position of Associate / Assistant Professor of Linguistics.
The Department of English is an established and distinguished multinational, scholarly community. The Department offers an undergraduate degree in English Studies focusing on Linguistics and Literary Studies, as well as a Minor programme in Translation Studies. At the postgraduate level the Department offers an MA in English Studies, an MA in Translation Studies and a new MA in Second Language Acquisition (delivered with the Departments of Portuguese and Chinese). There are two PhD areas in (i) English Linguistics and (ii) English Literary Studies. The Faculty of Arts and Humanities is home to the Centre for Studies in Translation, Interpreting and Cognition (http://cstic.umac.mo), and a state-of-the-art Cognitive Laboratory. The Department of English aims to recruit staff who will collaborate in research and teaching in the areas of cognition, translation and/or language acquisition.
Qualifications
The successful applicant will have a PhD degree in Linguistics or Translation/Interpreting Studies, and will preferably have a background in computer programming and statistics. The applicant should have teaching experience at tertiary-level institutions and a record of quality research publications. Preference will be given to applicants who have a research specialisation in psycholinguistics and/or neurolinguistics, and experience in studying language processing and/or translation/interpreting using instruments such as eye-tracker, key-logging, EEG, etc. Proficiency in Chinese is also a considerable advantage. The appointee will be expected to teach undergraduate and MA courses, and to supervise students at MA and PhD levels. The appointee will also be required to continue to publish research in quality publications, such as international, indexed scholarly journals.
The selected candidate is expected to assume duty in August 2017.
Position and Remuneration
Remuneration and appointment rank offered will be competitive and commensurate with the successful applicants’ academic qualification, current position and professional experience. The current local maximum income tax rate is 12% but is effectively around 5% – 7% after various discretionary exemptions.
