EMPOWERED VOICES: FEMALE REPRESENTATION AND HISPANIC WOMEN WRITERS IN TRANSLATION
EMPOWERED VOICES: FEMALE REPRESENTATION
AND HISPANIC WOMEN WRITERS IN TRANSLATION
Taking a feminist approach to History and Culture, this course introduces students to the ways in which female writers have claimed new spaces, independence and equality, from the 18th Century to the present, in Spain and Latin America. We will read and discuss representative texts from prominent Hispanic women writers, to showcase the relevance of past discussions about women’s role in society to today’s world.
• Students will learn how feminist perspectives have targeted specific issues through history.
• Students will evaluate main feminist theories through concrete experiences of women in their sociocultural context.
• Students will examine the diversity of approaches to women’s writing, the cultural changes that led to women’s current situation and how these issues still impact women today.
• Students will challenge prevalent gender stereotypes through class discussions.
