FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT

The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures of John Jay College of Criminal Justice, City University of New York invites applications for the position of department chair. We anticipate filling the position at the level of associate professor or professor with tenure, effective Fall 2018.

John Jay College of Criminal Justice, a senior college of the City University of New York (CUNY), is an internationally recognized leader in educating for justice, committed to the advancement of justice and just societies. It is a public liberal arts college that enriches the entire learning experience by highlighting themes of justice across the arts, sciences, humanities, and social sciences. Located steps from Lincoln Center at the cultural heart of New York City, the College offers bachelors and masters degrees and participates in the doctoral programs of the Graduate Center of the City University of New York. John Jay College is also recognized for serving a broadly diverse student population. Now under the leadership of its fifth President, former U.S. Assistant Attorney General, Karol V. Mason, the college has experienced unprecedented faculty hiring, an expansion of its curricular offerings, and the opening in 2011 of a new 600,000 square foot building with a black-box theater, state-of-the-art lab space, a moot court, and a variety of virtual learning settings.

The Department of Modern Languages offers a B.A. in Spanish with a concentration in Translation and Interpretation and a concentration in Spanish and Latin American Literatures and Cultures, a Spanish Minor, and certificate programs in English/Spanish translation and interpretation. It also offers courses in Arabic, Chinese, French, Italian, German, Japanese, and Portuguese.

The department chair is the executive officer of the department and shall carry out the department’s policies and goals. The chair is expected to be a leader in fostering professional development of senior and junior faculty, staff and students, as well as in the recruitment and retention of talented full-time and adjunct faculty. The chair must represent departmental and faculty interests with administrators, other departments, programs and units, outside agencies, interested individuals and groups. Duties related to the administration of the department include managing the departmental budget, preparing annual class schedule, supporting department faculty, evaluating faculty performance, creating and executing a short and long term strategic plan, managing curriculum development and assessment, promoting the recruitment and retention of students, and fostering an environment of mutual respect and inclusiveness within the department.

The Chairperson position is an elected position voted on by the department faculty every three years as per PSC-CUNY contract.

QUALIFICATIONS

A Ph.D. in Spanish, Translation/Interpretation Studies, or in a related discipline such as Applied Linguistics (Spanish) from a regionally accredited U.S. institution or an equivalent non-U.S. institution; prior academic administrative responsibility with evidence of successful budget and personnel management; excellence in teaching; and a distinguished record of scholarly activity appropriate for tenured appointment at the rank of associate professor or professor. We are looking for candidates who can provide visionary and progressive leadership and are able to lead and manage a department with a commitment to teaching, research, and service in a Hispanic-serving institution.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS Evidence of successful academic program planning and development, including the ability to work with faculty to create and implement a shared vision for excellence and innovation; experience cultivating strategic partnerships and acquiring grant funding; demonstrated commitment to collaboration and interdisciplinarity, including community and global outreach; ability to teach a second language; experience with online learning.

COMPENSATION

Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications.
