The Nida School of Translation Studies exists to advance research in translation through a transdisciplinary approach that brings together varying perspectives and methodologies, challenges traditional disciplinary boundaries, and encourages original thinking about what translation is and the role it plays in a globalized world. The theme of our 2018 session, Translating Pedagogies, invites participants to enter with us into an exploration of the range and variety of approaches to teaching and learning that have shaped training programmes for translation and interpretation in contexts and cultures around the globe. Join us for a stimulating time of discussion and discovery, led by our two distinguished Nida Professors and a diverse roster of additional faculty lecturers.

NIDA PROFESSORS

Dorothy Kelly is Professor of Translation at the University of Granada (Spain), where she is also Vice Rector for Internationalization. She obtained her undergraduate degree in Translating and Interpreting at Heriot-Watt University (Edinburgh), before going on to earn a doctoral degree from the University of Granada. Her main research interests are translator training, directionality in translation, and intercultural competence, interests she has combined over the years with intense international activity, coordinating international mobility and joint degree programmes, as well as studies into the impact of mobility on intercultural competence and the learning environment. She is co-editor of the Interpreter and Translator Trainer, the only indexed journal devoted specifically to translator education, and has also been editor of the Translation Practices Explained series at St Jerome. She was a member of the European Master’s in Translation Expert Group appointed by the Directorate General for Translation at the European Commission. As Vice Rector, she was a member of Spain’s national Bologna Experts Team until 2013, and was the Chair of the Executive Board of the Coimbra Group of Universities from 2010 until 2017.

Brian J. Baer is Professor of Russian and Translation Studies at Kent State University, where he teaches translation-related courses at the undergraduate, Master’s and doctoral levels. He is the author of the monographs Other Russias: Homosexuality and the Crisis of Post-Soviet Identity (2009) and Translation and the Making of Modern Russian Literature (2016), as well as the editor of several volumes including Beyond the Ivory Tower: Re-thinking Translation Pedagogy, with Geoffrey Koby (2003), Contexts, Subtexts, Pretexts: Literary Translation in Eastern Europe and Russia (2011), Russian Writers on Translation. An Anthology, with Natasha Olshanskaya (2013), Researching Translation and Interpreting, with Claudia Angelelli (2015), and Translation in Russian Contexts, with Susanna Witt (2017). He is the translator of Juri Lotman’s final monograph The Unpredictable Workings of Culture (2013) and is currently completing a translation of Andrei Fedorov’s 1953 Introduction to Translation Theory, for which he was awarded the EST Translation Prize in 2014. He is founding editor of the journal Translation and Interpreting Studies and co-editor of the Bloomsbury book series Literatures, Cultures, Translation.

A fee of €1700 provides for tuition, housing, and meals throughout the duration of the school. A limited number of partial bursaries will be made available to applicants who demonstrate need and merit.
