[Event] Celebration of International Translation Day 2019
Celebration of International Translation Day 2019
Description
To celebrate International Translation Day 2019, Paul Kearns and Eneida Garcia Villanueva will be delivering two interactive sessions. CPD 4.5 hours.
Machine Translation – A help or a hindrance to your translation career? Presented by Paul Kearns
The presentation will look at different types of machine translation and discuss some of the current topics surrounding machine translation in the translation industry today. It will examine how quality is monitored and improved. Attendees will have a chance to try their skills at assessing machine translation quality and learn some of the principles involved in post-editing machine translation, helping them decide if this is a service they would like to offer.
The Ethics of PSI in the Scottish context – Presented by Eneida Garcia Villanueva
A range of ethical dilemmas can arise while undertaking Public Service Interpreting (PSI) work. Codes of Ethics and Codes of Professional Conduct do not always provide a straightforward answer to these dilemmas. Based on research undertaken by an experienced PSI interpreter in Scotland, this interactive workshop will look at some of these scenarios and suggest strategies to deal with them. Adopting a reflective approach, participants will be invited to discuss the ethical dilemmas presented, and how ‘self’ influences both interpreting practice and decision making.
