The Department of Language and Linguistics (DLL) has 37 full-time academic members of staff and provides a broad spectrum of expertise in the study of language and in the practical teaching of modern foreign languages. Its core ambition is to offer students a transformative educational experience in these areas underpinned by high quality research. The majority of research conducted in the department is rated ‘world leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’, placing us 8th among departments in the UK for research quality (REF 2014).
Our linguistics expertise covers Theoretical and Descriptive Linguistics, Applied Linguistics, Sociolinguistics, Psycholinguistics, TESOL and Translation, Interpreting and Subtitling. We offer a wide range of languages including French, German, Spanish, Italian and Portuguese that can be taken at degree level from beginners to advanced levels following the Common European Languages Framework.
The department is now seeking to appoint a part-time Lecturer in Translation and Interpreting.
Duties of the Role
The post holder will be required to direct and deliver modules in Spanish at Undergraduate level and Translation, Interpreting and Subtitling at Postgraduate level. Duties will include supervising UG/PGT dissertations and contributing to the successful administration and management of the department.
At this level academics are expected to engage effectively in substantive teaching and learning support roles in the Department; design, plan and deliver learning (modules, programmes of study, etc.) in creative and innovative ways; and enhance the scholarly reputation of the Department and the University by contact with the wider academic community and participation in knowledge exchange activity.
The post-holder will undertake a full range of Education, Leadership and Citizenship, and Scholarship and Professional Practice responsibilities and duties as detailed in the job pack.
Qualifications and Skills required
Applicants will have a relevant doctoral level degree in Translation Studies or equivalent professional experience or practice (or be close to completion of PhD) and will have fellowship of Higher Education Academy or the ability to gain professional recognition at this or a higher level. Qualifications in translation, interpreting and/or subtitling would be an advantage.
You will have experience of working independently in teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, an ability to provide teaching and learning support in engaging and innovative ways, along with a sustained engagement in continuing professional development in relevant subjects/disciplines and their pedagogies. In addition, a nativelike ability in Spanish and advanced proficiency in English coupled with experience in translation, interpreting, subtitling or other professional language skill is essential.
Strong communication skills, both written and verbal are essential for this post, along with proven ability to collaborate with colleagues on course development, curriculum changes and module delivery.
This is a permanent, part-time (0.7 FTE) role and appointment to this post will be made as Lecturer on a Teaching only (ASE) contract. The start date is 2 January 2020 or as soon as possible thereafter.
