The Department of Language and Linguistics (DLL) has 37 full-time academic members of staff and provides a broad spectrum of expertise in the study of language and in the practical teaching of modern foreign languages. Its core ambition is to offer students a transformative educational experience in these areas underpinned by high quality research. The majority of research conducted in the department is rated ‘world leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’, placing us 8th among departments in the UK for research quality (REF 2014).

Our linguistics expertise covers Theoretical and Descriptive linguistics, Applied linguistics, Sociolinguistics, Psycholinguistics, TESOL and Translation, Interpreting and Subtitling. We offer a wide range of languages including French, German, Spanish, Italian and Portuguese that can be taken at degree level from beginners to advanced levels following the Common European Languages Framework.

The Department is now seeking to appoint a full-time Lecturer in Translation, Interpreting and Spanish/Portuguese.

Duties of the Role

The appointed candidate will contribute to all aspects of the provision of Spanish/Portuguese language teaching level at undergraduate level, in addition to translation and interpreting modules at postgraduate level. Duties will include the teaching and development of modules and courses, design and administration of assessment tools, supervision of UG and PGT projects/dissertations.

You will be expected to contribute to excellence in education through designing and delivering effective teaching and learning support, and enhance the scholarly reputation of the Department and the University by contact with the wider academic community and participation in knowledge exchange activity.

Qualifications and Skills required

The successful candidate will have a relevant postgraduate degree and will have fellowship of Higher Education Academy or the ability to gain professional recognition at this or a higher level. Qualifications in translation, interpreting and/or subtitling would be an advantage.

You will have experience of working independently in teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level, an ability to provide teaching and learning support in engaging and innovative ways, along with a sustained engagement in continuing professional development in relevant subjects/disciplines and their pedagogies. In addition, nativelike ability in Spanish and/or Portuguese with an advanced proficiency in English, and experience of teaching both Translation, Interpreting and/or subtitling and Spanish and/or Portuguese within higher education is essential.

Strong communication skills, both written and verbal are essential for this post, along with proven ability to collaborate with colleagues on course development, curriculum changes and module delivery.

This is a permanent, full-time role on an ASE (teaching only) contract, starting date 1st July 2020, or as soon as possible thereafter. Appointment will be made as Lecturer. Please note that the University may not be able to offer Tier 2 visa sponsorship for this post.
