[Event] Warwick Translates Summer School

Warwick Translates Summer School

University of Warwick

8—12 July 2020

10am – 4.30pm daily plus evening events

Overview

Following the success of the inaugural Warwick Translates in 2019, we are delighted to announce that the summer school will be returning in 2020. For a review of Warwick Translates 2019 by two of our participants, see this report from the ITI Bulletin. You can also browse through our feedback.

Aimed at practising translators at any stage of their career and at language enthusiasts who want to explore the world of literary translation, Warwick Translates offers the opportunity to work with leading professional translators to translate texts across the literary genres into English. Groups are limited to allow for individual attention and places are allocated on a strictly first-come-first-served basis.

The course will be taught in morning and afternoon workshops using a variety of texts including fiction and non-fiction. Attendees can choose to work in one language or to split their time by attending morning workshops in one language and afternoon workshops in another language.

Lunchtime events include panels with Warwick Translates directors and a presentation/competition announcement by Comma Press. Evening events include a welcome reception and a keynote lecture by renowned poet and translator George Szirtes, ‘The Poet as Translator of Poetry and Fiction: or How to Mind One’s Own and Other People’s Business’. There will be an optional excursion to Stratford to discuss theatre translation with Daniel Hahn before attending a performance of Europeana at The Swan Theatre or The Winter’s Tale at the RSC Stratford.

For details of all events and timings, please see the provisional programme.

Eligibility

There are no formal entry requirements to take part in the course, except the language requirement detailed below.

English Requirements

As the workshops are all into English, it is essential that all applicants to the course have excellent command of English. If English is not your language of habitual use you will be sent a short passage to translate before your place at Warwick Translates is confirmed. We reserve the right to issue a refund to anyone who does not meet the English-language requirements of the summer school.

Please email smlc.summer.school@warwick.ac.uk to request this passage, specifying what language workshop(s) you would like to attend.
