The Department of Politics, Languages, and International Studies (PoLIS) at the University of Bath is looking to appoint a new Course Director for the prestigious MA Interpreting and Translating (Chinese) programme for the coming academic year. For over twenty years, this programme has recruited talented linguists from all over the world and helped them become high-level translators and interpreters. The Department has also maintained very close links with the United Nations, European Union institutions and numerous language sector companies.
As Course Director, you will carry out a pivotal role in the management and delivery of these successful postgraduate programmes. You will design, teach, and assess core English>Chinese simultaneous, consecutive and liaison interpreting units throughout the academic year and you may be required to contribute to some translation units as necessary. Furthermore, you will oversee the day-to-day management of the MA Interpreting and Translating (Chinese) programme in collaboration with your fellow Course Directors. You will be involved in dissertation supervision, admissions, and personal tutoring.
You must be able to provide evidence to show that Chinese is your main language and that you have an excellent working command of English. You must hold a master’s degree (or equivalent) in interpreting and have demonstrable experience of interpreting in professional contexts. You will need to be able to guide students as they develop their simultaneous, consecutive and liaison interpreting technique, drawing on your own professional experience to deliver relevant and useful feedback. Previous teaching experience is desirable.
If you have any questions please contact Steven Wonnacott (Director of Studies) on sw332@bath.ac.uk or Karoline Von Oppen (Deputy Head of Department) on mlskvo@bath.ac.uk
This role is offered on a full time, permanent basis.
