ASSIGNMENT
The Department of Translation, Interpreting and Communication of the Faculty of Arts and Philosophy at Ghent University offers a Bachelor’s degree in Applied Language Studies, and three one-year Master’s degrees (Translation, Interpreting, Multilingual Communication), a two-year European Master in Technology for Translation and Interpreting and three postgraduate programmes (Conference Interpreting, Computer-Assisted Language Mediation, Dutch and Translation). We are seeking to appoint a multilingual assistant professor (tenure track) with specialisation in Audiovisual Translation. The appointment will include academic teaching, academic research, and academic services. The earliest starting date of the position is 1 September 2023.
Academic education
You will be responsible for teaching different modalities of Audiovisual Translation (e.g. inter- and intralingual subtitling, dubbing, audio description, audio subtitling, voiceover, re-speaking, live subtitling) to native Dutch-speaking students as well as international students. As a multilingual expert you are able to translate into Dutch or English and from one or a number of languages taught in our curricula (Dutch, English, French, German, Italian, Spanish). Depending on your specific language expertise you will also contribute to foreign language teaching and/or specialized translation courses. You will supervise bachelor and master dissertations in our curricula.
Academic research
You conduct research in the field of audiovisual translation. You set out new lines of research in this domain and you are open to collaboration with one or several existing research groups (EQTIS, TRACE, LT3, MULTIPLES). You will communicate research findings both in established academic outlets (peer-reviewed journals, peer-reviewed monographs, tier I conferences) and to a broad audience of non-academic readers.
Academic services
You will take part in the internal and external service provision of the Department of Translation, Interpreting and Communication.
PROFILE
Experience
- You have obtained a PhD in a relevant field (translation studies, applied linguistics, etc.);
- You have already conducted high-quality academic research in the specified research field, which is clearly reflected in publications in high-quality academic journals and peer-reviewed books;
- You are capable of initiating, supervising and acquiring the necessary funding for academic research;
- You are didactically skilled to teach university students to develop academic competences;
- You have demonstrable experience in teaching at university level;
- You have good receptive knowledge of one or several foreign languages (Dutch, English, French, German, Italian, Spanish);
- You have a command of Dutch and English of at least level B2, or you are prepared to attain level B2 within five years of recruitment; and you have a C2 level command in one of these two languages.

Admission requirements
- You hold a thesis-based doctoral degree or a diploma or certificate that is recognised as equivalent (article V.20 Codex Higher Education).
Upon evaluation of a foreign (non-EU) degree, a certificate of equivalence may still have to be requested at NARIC. If this is the case, we advise you to initiate this recognition procedure as soon as possible. You are required to have the recognition no later than the date of your appointment.
- You have at least two years of postdoctoral experience on 1 September 2023.This term of two years is determined by the date written on the required degree mentioned above.
APPOINTMENT INFORMATION
We offer you a temporary appointment in a tenure track system for a term of five years. If positively evaluated by the University Board, the term of office will be transferred into a permanent appointment as an associate professor.
Should you already be a member of the professorial staff or hold an equal post at a university or research institution, you can immediately be appointed as a tenured assistant professor, without prejudice to the possibility of a temporary appointment offered in article V.28 of the Codex of Higher Education.

SELECTION PROCEDURE
After the final application date, all received applications will be sent to the faculty selection committee for this vacancy. After a pre-selection on the basis of the submitted and assessed as admissible application files, the selection committee may hear the candidates about their vision and planning regarding education, research and services. It is also possible to organize a trial lesson or a presentation on a subject in the relevant field. Afterwards, the committee will rank the suitable candidates and present this ranking to the Faculty Board. The advice of the Faculty Board will then be presented to the University Board for approval.
Candidates are also asked to discuss their top 5 most important publications or other academic achievements with the highest impact (in the application form). Next to academic publications, the candidate is thus also able to show merit of knowledge transfer by academic dissemination, social valorisation, public awareness, seminars or conference presentations. These competences are also taken into account when evaluating the candidates.
Based on this consideration, a shortlist of relevant candidates will be drawn up who will be invited for further selection. They will be invited to provide the following documents: (1) a text (max. 1500 words) in which the applicant explains his/her vision on research, education and scientific service with regard to the position to be filled, (2) a portfolio with additional information on the teaching competences and (3) a research proposal (max. 1500 words) on the research the applicant wishes to set up concretely within the research field of audiovisual translation. The research proposal should include at least the following components: background; objectives/questions; method; expected results; feasibility. Shortlisted candidates will also be invited for a trial lesson and an interview with the assessment committee. Following this, the assessment committee will rank the suitable candidates and submit them to the Faculty Council for its opinion. The Faculty Council’s recommendation will be submitted to the University Board for approval.
The evaluation of the required international mobility is broad and partly takes the gender perspective into account, thus not only considering longer stays abroad but also other forms of internationalisation.
Pregnancy leave, prolonged sick leave, parental leave, filial leave or other forms of absence are taken into account when evaluating the time available for the creation of academic output.
