[Job Vacancy] Doctoral scholarship holder translation studies and media accessibility

The Department of Applied Linguistics/Translators & Interpreters in the Faculty of Arts is looking for a full-time (100%) doctoral scholarship holder in the field of Translation Studies and Media Accessibility.
Position
- You will work actively on the preparation and defence of a PhD thesis in the fields of Translation Studies and Media Accessibility working on a project entitled “TAP: Tapping the audio description process”.
- This project takes an empirical and experimental approach, combining qualitative and quantitative methods used in Cognitive Translation Studies. The project has three aims:
- to conceptualize the AD process model(s);
- to conceptualize intersemiotic translation as a process;
- to test the reactivity of think-aloud protocols (TAP) in AD process research.
You will conduct four experiments, two on AD-writing and two on AD-translation. We monitor the participants’ work with keylogging, eye tracking, screen, voice and face recording, and interviews. Participants will be asked to think aloud in half of the tasks.
- You will work on this doctoral research project within the TricS research group (https://www.uantwerpen.be/en/research-groups/translation-interpreting).
- You will publish scientific articles related to the research project in collaboration with three supervisors.
- You will carry out a limited number of teaching, research and organizational support tasks for the Department of Applied Linguistics/Translators & Interpreters and the OPEN Expertise Centre (https://www.opentoegankelijk.be/en).
- You will carry out a limited number of tasks for the editorial board of the Journal of Audiovisual Translation (www.jatjournal.org).
Profile
- You hold a Master degree in Translation Studies, Media Accessibility, Linguistics, Applied Linguistics, Psychology, Writing Studies or equivalent, or you will have obtained it by the time you start work.
- You can demonstrate excellent study results.
- You have excellent (C1/C2) English communication skills and (B2/C1) level of another EU language.
- Knowledge of Dutch will be taken favourably into account.

- Previous experience in research-like activities and statistical analysis (e.g., demonstrated in the form of a master thesis, published research articles or previous documented work experience) will be taken favourably into account.
- Previous experience with translation or writing process research or user experience research and methodologies, such as keystroke logging, eye tracking and/or focus groups, will be taken favourably into account.
- Knowledge of SPSS or R, Excel and NVivo, Atlas.ti or Dedoose is recommended.
- Your teaching competences are in line with the University of Antwerp’s educational vision.
- Your research qualities are in line with the faculty and university research policies.
What we offer
- We offer a doctoral scholarship for a period of two years. Following a positive evaluation, the scholarship can be renewed for another two years.
- The planned start date is 1 February 2025 or as soon as possible after that date.
- Your monthly scholarship amount is calculated according to the scholarship amounts for doctoral scholarship holders on the pay scales for Contract Research Staff (Dutch: Bijzonder Academisch Personeel, BAP).
- You will receive ecocheques, Internet-connectivity allowance, and a bicycle allowance or a full reimbursement of public transport costs for commuting.
