The Department of Applied Linguistics, Translation and Interpreting Studies in the Faculty of Arts is looking for a full-time (100%) doctoral scholarship holder in the field of interpreting studies

Position

  • You will work actively on the preparation and defence of a PhD thesis in Interpreting Studies.
    • Project: Multimodality in simultaneous interpreting: The effect of visual support on cognitive processing and performance. Abstract: In simultaneous interpreting (SI) incoming verbal and nonverbal information from the speaker is frequently complemented by supports such as a slide presentation (with or without captioning) or computer-assisted interpreting (CAI) tools (e.g., terminology software). Yet, the equation between the facilitating effect of these supports in terms of performance and the added cognitive load on information processing lacks empirical investigation. We attempt to fill this gap by investigating the effect of multimodality on interpreters’ performance, visual attention, cognitive load, stress, and user experience. To this end, we will conduct two experimental, within-subject studies involving 12 professional interpreters.
  • You will publish scientific articles related to the research project.
  • You will carry out a limited number of teaching and research support tasks for the Department of Applied Linguistics, Translation and Interpreting Studies and its research group TricS.

Profile

  • You hold a Master’s degree in Interpreting, preferably obtained in 2023, or (to be obtained) in 2024.
  • You work in at least one these language combinations: English (L2 or L3, C1) to Dutch (L1, C2), English (L2 or L3, C1) to French (L1, C2)
  • You can demonstrate excellent study results
  • You have a passion for research, as demonstrated in your Master thesis (grade/topic)
  • You have a strong interest in technology related to interpreting
  • You have a strong interest in and preferably experience with quantitative research and statistics
  • Your teaching competences are in line with the University of Antwerp’s educational vision.
  • Your research qualities are in line with the faculty and university research policies.
  • You act with attention to quality, integrity, creativity and cooperation.
  • You are highly motivated, a team-player, communicative, you can work autonomously and have basic knowledge of CAI tools
