Call for Papers: TSNI 5 on Challenges in Translation and Interpreting

We invite scholars, practitioners, researchers, and students to submit abstracts for presentations at the upcoming 5th Translation Studies Network of Ireland (TSNI) International Conference on Challenges in Translation and Interpreting. This conference aims to explore the evolving challenges, ethical dilemmas, and innovative practices shaping the fields of translation and interpreting across various domains.

In an increasingly globalized and interconnected world, the fields of translation and translation studies face unprecedented challenges. This conference examines the complexities and evolving demands of translation in contemporary society, where technological advancements, cultural diversity, ethical considerations, and global crises converge.

Two recent issues involving complex challenges that require further discussion are the use of machine translation and generative AI and emerging slow-translation movements. Additionally, the need for inclusive language and gender sensitivity challenges translators to navigate linguistic structures that may not naturally accommodate non-binary or gender-neutral expressions across different languages. The ethical landscape also presents challenges, as translators work in high-stakes fields like medical, legal, and humanitarian settings, where accuracy, confidentiality, and impartiality are essential, as is the wellbeing of the translator, particularly when they face elements of trauma. Translators are increasingly called to ensure accessibility for different audiences that have various communicative needs, like audio description for the blind or visually impaired, subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing, or Irish sign language (ISL), adding another layer of responsibility to their work. Finally, lesser-used languages face all the same challenges in translation, but with further resource pressures.

This conference therefore aims to explore multidimensional challenges, highlighting the translator’s role and voice, underscoring the need for reflection on these challenges. We hope to consider translators’ education and their professional development to address the complex demands in our rapidly changing world.
